Jasmin Miller, 24, bought a home test kit when a sandwich made her feel bloated. A woman surprised when she found out she was 5 months pregnant said she just took the test as a joke. Jasmin Miller, 24, bought a home test kit when a sandwich made her feel bloated and her mother joked she might be expecting. When the first test came back positive, she frantically tried three more times only to get the same result.
Ms. Miller, a social media manager from San Diego, California, gave
birth to her first child, Leighton, just three months later. She said:
“The reason I took the test was that a week before I went to a concert,
ate a sandwich, and then got fat. I was immediately frustrated when I
saw the tests and started gawking until I got to the hospital and they
literally told me “you’re not leaving the hospital with your baby.”
She’s not getting her period because she’s on birth control pills and
will skip the placebo week.
She dismisses severe cramps and frequent urination as simply signs she is unwell. The recent graduate said: “I had a boyfriend who was not too serious and 100% of us were not ready to get married.” I remember one time he asked me if we could get a dog, and my answer was correct is ‘a dog? That’s like a 15 year commitment, what are we going to do? Normally sizes 10 and 72kg (160lbs), by the week Ms. Miller found out she was pregnant, she had actually lost weight and was down to sizes 8 and 68kg (150lbs).
In late July 2019, Jasmin went to a Billie Eilish concert where she ate tomato sandwiches as a snack and quickly became extremely bloated. She said: “It was so unusual, I sent a picture to my mom and said there was something wrong with looking at me with bloating.” My mother joked that I looked pregnant based on the location of the tumor. She joked but said I should get tested just in case. “Miss Miller and a friend went to a pharmacy and picked up two pregnancy tests as a joke and to ease the mind of Erica’s mother.
When the test came back positive, she said she was “bewildered” and “didn’t know what to do”. She drove over to meet her mother, who was also in tears when she heard the news. “She told me she was upset because she knew how difficult it would be for me because she’s also a young single mother at 24,” she said. The next day, she went to the reproductive health professionals but was told they could only help her if she knew she wanted to have an abortion right away, which she wasn’t sure about. Four days later, she went to the doctor for the first time and had an ultrasound, which discovered she was 19 weeks and 5 days old.
“I started laughing and talking in the ultrasound room with the technician,” she said. I was completely alone and very scared. I was in total sʜᴏᴄᴋ, full of confidence and a lot of denial. “When she tried to tell the father – her ex-boyfriend about her breakup just two weeks before – she claimed he accused her of lying and she didn’t.” “In the middle of my conversation, he got up, got out of the car, slammed the door, and didn’t look back,” Miller recalls. “That was the last time I saw him while pregnant.”
She said the next 12 weeks were a whirlwind of preparation for her arrival, but she wanted to keep her pregnancy secret as much as possible. “I hid my entire pregnancy from the world because I was afraid of being judged by people I knew in high school,” she said. She said, “It’s crazy to imagine my life without her and where I would be if she didn’t have other people go through the same situation.” I think sharing is a powerful tool and to see that life is not perfect, but you make it.”
