Many people have cysts behind their ears and luckily, most of them are benign. But, sometimes some of these painless lumps behind the ear may indicate a very severe condition. The patient should definitely visit a doctor if they do not disappear by the end of the fourth week.
If these bumps or lumps don’t disappear, they can indicate many things. Some of them are:
Sebaceous cysts
These types of cysts are caused by blocked or damaged sebaceous glands. Small sebaceous cysts are usually painless and harmless, but if the cyst is infected, it can become very painful.
Drugs are used to treat these cysts, but doctors also use injections in many case. Doctors can also drain the cyst or remove it surgically.
Lymphoma
The lymphoma is very common, too. It is usually located behind the ear, but numerous lymphomas can also appear on the back, arms, neck, shoulders or thighs. Lymphomas are benign lumps. They are usually removed through surgery, especially if they become large in size.
Tumors
Tumors behind the ear enclose the salivary glands, mastoid bone or skin. The symptoms can vary depending on the location, as well as the size of tumors. The hearing can be affected by benign tumors and in that case dizziness appears.
